Ward 4 Sport Day unites community through competition and camaraderie

Held on 29 and 30 March 2025 at the Joe Slovo Phoenix Sport and Recreation Centre, Telkom Park Sport Ground and Hellenic Sport Complex, the annual event featured athletics, soccer, netball and boxing.
Funded entirely through the ward allocation budget, the initiative provides local teams with the opportunity to compete and hone their skills in a supportive environment. Throughout the event, participants displayed sportsmanship, determination and teamwork, making it a celebration of local talent and community unity.
‘Ward 4 Sport Day’ is about more than just competition—it’s about bringing our community together, fostering a love of sport and providing a platform for our local athletes to shine. This event highlights the dedication and enthusiasm of our residents and I’m thrilled to see such incredible participation,’ said local Councillor Anthony Benadie.

Senior Facility Officer Mzingisi Vutula, along with the area recreation team, project-managed this event, demonstrating outstanding leadership to ensure its smooth execution. Their dedication to creating opportunities for an active lifestyle and fostering community involvement was evident throughout, leaving a lasting impact.
As part of the Department's Youth League Afterschool programme, the event also incorporated recreational games and aquatics, providing structured opportunities for young people to participate in sport and develop active, healthy lifestyles.
The City remains committed to investing in grassroots sport initiatives to ensure that communities continue to benefit from structured and well-supported sporting events.
Selected participants of the Ward 4 Sport Day will also have the opportunity to compete in the City's Cape Town Games at the end of April, where youth from across the metropole will take part in various friendly competitions.
